Measure out your ingredients and combine into a small bowl.
Stir together until paste is formed. Let sit for 1 minute to see if consistency of paste is desired. Add more spice powder or oil if needed to reach desired consistency.
Notes
The amounts in this recipe can easily be changed depending on how much you want to make. Use a 2:2:1 ratio of harissa powder to olive oil to water. So to make only a little bit, you could use 2 teaspoon harissa powder, 2 teaspoons olive oil, 1 teaspoon water. Or you could use 1 teaspoon harissa powder, 1 teaspoon olive oil, ½ teaspoon water. Tips:
I found that using a 2:2:1 ratio tends to work best for making a harissa paste. However, if you want a very thick harissa paste, use a 2:1:1 ratio of powder:oil:water.
If your homemade harissa paste is too thick, simply add a bit more oil until you reach your desired consistency.
Alternately, if your paste is too thin, add a bit more spice powder to thicken.
You can heat the paste to make sure everything incorporates well together. However, I rarely take that extra step.
The recipe will keep in the fridge for around a week. I typically make just around the amount I need, so I don't have leftovers.
