This recipe for chia seed lemonade (chia fresca) is healthy and delicious! The chia seeds add a fun texture to the water. Add a bit of sweetener to make it more like lemonade, or leave the sweetener out to make more of a chia seed lemon water. Both are delicious!

Lately I've been trying to incorporate more healthy seeds into my diet. Apparently chia seeds, flaxseeds, and hemp seeds are super-healthy and versatile!

And in my never ending quest to drink more water, I decided to make this recipe for chia seed lemonade. Sometimes it's also called chia fresca. It's a delicious way to have healthy chia seeds. A bonus is that it's fun to drink. The chia seeds sort of gel a little bit in the water, but they also keep kinda a cool texture when you drink them. I love it.

The fresh lemon juice adds a nice brightness to the drink. If you want, you can add a touch of sweetener, but you don't need to. It's refreshing and delicious either way!

What are chia seeds?

Chia seeds are a small black seed that originates from Central America. You can use them in so many ways! Smoothies, in water, in salads, etc. If you're gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan, they are a great part of those diets!

Are chia seeds healthy?

Chia seeds are fiber and antioxidant rich. They are also a great source of Omega-3s. Chia seeds contain many vitamins and minerals including iron, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

Where to find chia seeds:

Chia seeds can be found in most grocery stores! You can definitely find them at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. If you can't find them at your grocery store, you can always order some on Amazon.

Ingredients needed

  • Chia seeds
  • Water
  • Lemon
  • Sweetener (optional) - honey, agave syrup, or maple syrup

How to make chia seed lemonade:

To make the chia seed lemonade, first find a glass or whatever you want to drink out of!

Then, slice a lemon in half. If you want, also slice a few slices for garnish.

Add the water, juice from half the lemon, chia seeds, and any sweetener if you want. Then stir to combine. Place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the chia seeds to gel and bloom. Then give a good stir before drinking and enjoy!

Most of the chia seeds will kinda sink to the bottom, so stir or shake (if you have it in a jar) to distribute them a little more, as you're drinking. Otherwise, just enjoy as you get to the bottom of the drink!

This recipe for chia seed water can easily be doubled for an even more refreshing drink!
