Sumac potatoes are roasted in the oven to perfection to get nicely crispy. The potatoes are tossed with ground sumac seasoning and are a delicious side dish!
Roasted potatoes are one of my favorite side dishes. They are just so easy to make and delicious! I love tossing them in a variety of spices, but lately sumac has been my favorite.
The sumac brings such a bright and unique flavor to the potatoes. I love eating these on their own, or as a delicious accompaniment to chicken or fish!
Ingredients
- Yukon gold potatoes
- Olive oil
- Sumac
- Salt
What is sumac?
Sumac is a spice that is common in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. While there is a poisonous plant named sumac that is not edible, the edible version is very different.
The edible sumac comes from berries that are red and grow in clusters. This is the type that is used in cooking.
Steer clear of the sumac plant that has white berries (a VERY different plant). That is the type that is poisionous.
What does sumac taste like?
Sumac is tart and citrusy with light floral notes. The spice is a delicious way to bring that citrus lemony flavor to dishes without adding extra liquid from lemon juice.
It also has slight earthy notes, and is delicious with potatoes, carrots, other vegetables, and is commonly used as a seasoning for grilled meat, especially in kebabs.
What to serve with the potatoes
These roasted sumac potatoes are delicious served as a side dish with harissa honey chicken, air fryer panko chicken, or with ras el hanout chicken thighs.
The potatoes would also be delicious served with some greek yogurt and fresh mint. I would also pair these with this spicy feta dip!
Recipe notes
- Potatoes may take a little longer or shorter to cook based on your oven and how large you cut the potatoes. Make sure to pierce them with a fork to test for doneness before serving.
- If you want to add more seasonings, add some harissa powder, paprika, or garlic powder to increase the flavor.
