A Review of Trader Joe's Mochi Cake Mix

So. I read the reviews for Trader Joe's Mochi Cake. And when I was browsing the aisles recently I spotted it. And I grabbed it. And I told Josh "we MUST make this! I've heard amazing things!"

And so one summer afternoon, we made the Trader Joe's Mochi Cake Mix. What did we think?

First, let's talk a little bit about mochi. It's a Japanese rice cake that has a texture that's a bit chewy, bouncy, and glutinous. And then we have the butter mochi cake, popular in Hawaii. It uses rice flour and the texture is said to be a bit chewy but still fluffy.

So what was the Trader Joe's mochi cake like?

Honestly, not good. When we made it, the texture was all glutinous like mochi is. There was no fluffiness involved. Even though I had heard this is not like a cake texture, and is like a mochi texture, it was WAY too much for me.

Now let's be fair. I'm not a huge mochi eater. But I can appreciate it. And I did not appreciate this cake.

However, Josh loves mochi. He is a big fan. AND has a big sweet tooth. And even he only ate one piece of the cake before we wound up leaving it sitting on our counter for days and finally throwing it away.

I've heard so many others rave about this cake. Maybe we did something wrong. But I'm not eager to try it again. Trader Joe's makes many other mixes that work well and are delicious, that I think I'll just stick to those.

Did you have a different experience? Or did you try it and agree with us? Either way, let us know what you think of the cake!

Tried finding reviews that mirrored my own. It was awful! Mine was white when down and I put it back in cause I thought it was raw. My daughters compared it to cream of wheat. It’s so so gross. Not even a mochi texture. Like overcooked cream of wheat texture. Terrible terrible flavor and texture. Gross. 0/5.

You all are trippin. And it looks like you over cooked it. Should be white on top not brown. It has a great light coconut flavor, very delicate. Addicting texture especially if you like mochi. The people who tried it prob never had real mochi. What a bunch of noobs lol… went back and bought 5 more boxes. My Asian wife also love it!

Thanks so much for the feedback! I've certainly had mochi and am a fan. Maybe I did overcook it and that was the issue! I appreciate your comment, I may have to pick up another box soon and see if I can make it better next time.

Baked a lot of cakes in my life, but this boxed cake is the worst one I’ve ever tasted. Cake went in the garbage immediately. I can’t imagine anyone liking this taste.

I just finished baking it & oh my... It is gross! I do love mochi & it's not the texture I didn't like. The flavor was horrible. Besides a blandness, it taste like old salty pantry crackers 😜
