Crispy air fryer banana chips are perfectly dehydrated to give you that nice crispness. These are tossed with oil and a bit of cinnamon to give a delicious flavor to the banana chips.
These banana chips are perfectly dehydrated so they get nice and crisp.
It took me several tries to get this dehydrated banana chip recipe perfected for you guys. Which meant eating a lot of bananas. I'm not complaining, but I was so excited when I finally got the time and temperature perfected to get crispy banana chips!
Unfortunately, other recipes I had tried gave me more burnt banana chips that were still soft and never really crisped up. But I tried and tested those so you don't have to!
In my recipe, the key is the longer cook time and lower temperature. That's what you need to properly dry out the bananas to really get those crispy dehydrated banana chips. So I hope you try and enjoy!
Ingredients
- Bananas - It's best to use green or yellow bananas to make banana chips, because they will be firmer. Once bananas are spotted, they are usually too mushy to handle properly.
- Avocado oil or olive oil
- Cinnamon - This is optional, but I like it when I'm making air fried cinnamon banana chips.
How to make air fryer banana chips
Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 300 degrees F.
Slice the bananas into slices about ¼ inch in thickness and place in a bowl. If you slice slightly thinner, they will cook more quickly and crisp up even better, but be harder to work with, so I usually aim for just about ¼ inch thickness.
In a small bowl, mix together the cinnamon and oil.
Pour the cinnamon oil over the bananas.
Stir carefully (I usually do this with a rubber spatula) until banana slices are coated.
Place the banana slices in the air fryer in a single layer (you may need to cook in batches).
Air fry at 300 degrees F for 25-28 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking.
Let cool. This will allow the banana chips to crisp up better as they cool.
Enjoy!
Recipe tips
- Cooking time will depend on the thickness of your banana slices and your particular air fryer. Most of the time, it will take between 25-28 minutes for your banana chips to get crispy and delicious. If your banana slices are thinner than ¼ inch thick, they may cook more quickly, so check frequently to make sure they don't burn.
- Mixing together the cinnamon with the oil helps the cinnamon be distributed more evenly than just sprinkling on. Don't skip this step!
- Let the banana chips cool for 5-10 minutes after coming out of the air fryer to allow them to crisp up.
Customization ideas
- Savory - Leave out the cinnamon and instead sprinkle the banana slices with salt.
- Spicy - Add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the oil.
- Sweet - While bananas are naturally sweet, to add even more sweetness, add a ½ teaspoon of brown sugar to the cinnamon mixture.
