Air fryer chestnuts are a delicious fall and holiday treat. Roasting chestnuts in the air fryer is easy to do and roasts them up quickly.

Air fryer chestnuts in a bowl

Here in Lisbon the chestnut roasters have been popping up on so many corners. And I just love the smell and walking by. It makes it feel so much like fall and the holidays here.

I've bought chestnuts a few times from the chestnut roasters and they are so delicious. I love the meatiness and saltiness. I've fallen in love. And I also love air frying things. So I pulled out my air fryer to make a quick and easy air fryer version of roasted chestnuts.

The verdict? So delicious. The air fryer cooks the chestnuts to perfection. My husband said they were just as good as the street vendor roasted version. So that's a win in my book.

There are some key things to follow when roasting up chestnuts in your air fryer. It's not as simple as just popping them in. So make sure to follow the tips and step by step instructions so you can have the best air fried chestnuts.

My tips for air frying chestnuts

  • Don't skip soaking the chestnuts in water! It may seem unncessary, but it's an important step to cooking them properly.
  • When making the "x" in the chestnuts, try not to cut too deep. You want to cut through the shell, but not through too much of the chestnut (though I admit, sometimes I cut into a little too much of the chestnut, but they still come out fine).
  • Wrapping the chestnuts in a kitchen towel after they come out of the air fryer for a few minutes will make the chestnuts even easier to peel! So it's not completely necessary, but I usually do it.
  • This recipe will make enough to serve four people. If you're making it for 1 or 2 people, definitely cut the amounts in half.

How to make air fryer chestnuts

Add the chestnuts to a large bowl (large enough to cover them with a lot of water.

Raw chestnuts in a bowl

Boil water and then pour it over the chestnuts. Let sit for 15 minutes.

Remove any chestnuts that have floated to the very top of the bowl (as those may be rotten). Then place the chestnuts on a cutting board flat side down and cut an "x" in the top of the chestnut. You want to mostly cut through the shell, but not too deep into the chestnut.

Raw chestnuts scored with an x

Add the chestnuts to the air fryer. Air fry at 400 degrees F for 7-10 minutes, shaking after 5 minutes and checking at the 7 minute mark for doneness. (Mine are usually done at the 8.5 minute mark). Roasting times can depend on both the size of your chestnuts and how roasted you want your chestnuts to be.

Add your air fried chestnuts to a kitchen towel and wrap. This helps to make them easier to peel.

Leave in the towel for 3-4 minutes, then salt and enjoy.

Sometimes I use flaky sea salt, sometimes I use smaller flakes of salt. Use what you have and enjoy!
