Air fryer chicken fajitas cook up in 15 minutes! They are easy to make and get perfectly charred. The fajitas are flavored with a homemade fajita seasoning blend that coats the chicken and vegetables perfectly.
Chicken fajitas are so quick to make in the air fryer! All it takes is a few shakes of the basket to combine everything while they're cooking, and they come up perfect!
The onions and peppers get nicely charred, and the chicken is juicy and delicious. Even better? It only takes 15 minutes to cook chicken fajitas in the air fryer!
And then you can serve however you like! I love air fried chicken fajitas on a tortilla with homemade guacamole, but some people love shredded cheese, sour cream, and fresh cilantro.
Ingredients
- Chicken breast - I prefer to use boneless skinless chicken breast to make the fajitas, but you can also use boneless, skinless chicken thighs if you prefer. (If you use chicken thighs, you may need to add a couple of minutes to the cook time).
- Bell Peppers - You can use yellow, orange, red, or green bell pepper. I love a mix of several, so it adds more festive colors to my chicken fajitas.
- Onion - I use a simple yellow or white onion, but you can swap it out for red onion if that's what you have.
- Olive oil or other heat-safe oil like canola or avocado oil
- Tortillas - I typically eat my air fryer chicken fajitas with flour tortillas, but corn tortillas would be delicious too
- Fajita seasoning - cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper
- Optional: lime, avocado, shredded cheese, fresh cilantro
How to make air fryer chicken fajitas
First, slice up your chicken, half an onion, and two bell peppers into thin strips. Remove the top and insides of the bell peppers before slicing.
Add the sliced chicken, bell peppers, and onion to a bowl.
In another small bowl, make your fajita seasoning. Add your cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper to a bowl. Stir to combine.
Add the olive oil to the chicken and vegetables. Toss with your hands until oil is distributed. Then add the fajita seasoning and toss until seasoning is mixed through the chicken and vegetables.
Place your chicken and vegetables in your air fryer basket. Make sure they are spread out.
Cook for 15-20 minutes at 390 degrees F, opening your air fryer basket and tossing every 4-5 minutes.
Serve with the air fryer chicken fajitas with tortillas and enjoy!
Recipe tips
- When slicing your chicken breast, slice it into thin strips, similar to how you slice the onion and pepper. You can see in my photos, my chicken is a similar size to the onion and pepper slices.
- Different air fryers cook differently. Start checking for doneness around 12 minutes, and cook for longer if needed. 15 minutes was perfect in my air fryer to get everything charred and cooked through, but you may need up to 20 minutes.
- Really make sure you've tossed all your veggies and chicken in the oil and then distributed the seasoning throughout the bowl when mixing. This will make sure everything is perfectly seasoned.
- I used 2 bell peppers (orange and red), when I made this dish, but you can actually use more if you want. And it doesn't matter which colors you use! Yellow, green, orange, red? Use what you love (and have on hand!)
Customization ideas
When making air fryer chicken fajitas, it's easy to make it your own based on your likes! You could easily swap out the chicken for steak or mushrooms.
You can also throw in some jalapenos when cooking if you love more spice. And if you don't want to make your own homemade fajita seasoning, you can use store bought (though making your own is so easy).
How to serve chicken fajitas
While you can customize the ingredients in so many ways, where the real customization comes in is how you top your air fryer chicken fajitas!
You can add a squeeze of fresh lime juice to brighten up the fajitas and top with some fresh cilantro.
You can also add your favorite condiment, whether that be guacamole, salsa, or a dollop of sour cream. (I love making an easy homemade guacamole by mashing up one large avocado with the juice from half a lime).
And of course, top your chicken fajitas with some shredded cheddar cheese or monterey jack!
