Air fryer grilled cheese is so incredibly easy to make. The cheese gets perfectly melty and gooey in in the air fryer.

Air fryer grilled cheese on a plate

I have to admit something. I am not good at making grilled cheese on the stovetop. I feel like I always burn it or the cheese doesn't melt enough. But no worries! Now I just make it in the air fryer and it comes out perfect every time.

Crispy bread. Melty, gooey cheese. So good. You can make one or multiples if you have room in your air fryer. This is perfect for when my kids want grilled cheese too!

Ingredients

  • Bread - You can use any type of bread in this. Sourdough, regular sandwich bread, etc.
  • Butter - While I typically use butter to make my air fryer grilled cheese, some people prefer using mayo. Either works. You can also use a plant-based butter if you prefer.
  • Cheese - Use cheese slices you love. I personally prefer a sharp cheddar in my grilled cheese, but if you love American cheese or gouda cheese, etc, use what you love. You can also use deli slices or slice up your own.

What to know before making grilled cheese in the air fryer

  • Cheese slices work really well in this recipe. However, you can use shredded cheese if you prefer. I do like shredding myself, as it seems it melts better than the preshredded kinds in the bags, as those typically have stuff added to them to prevent them from sticking together (which can affect melting).
  • If you have any cheese kinda over the edge of the bread, it may get a little burnt. Ideally you want the cheese to be completely covered by the bread.
  • You can make multiple sandwiches at one time! As many as fit in your air fryer.
  • Do not preheat your air fryer when making grilled cheese in your air fryer.
