Air Fryer Caprese Grilled Cheese is an easy and flavorful sandwich to make. This crispy sandwich is a fun take on a regular grilled cheese bringing in the Italian flavors of pesto and tomatoes.

Grilled cheese is so easy to make in the air fryer. It comes out perfectly golden and crispy and the cheese melts to the perfect gooeyness. But why make a boring grilled cheese (except that its delicious), when you can amp it up with other flavors and ingredients!?

Air fryer grilled cheese with tomatoes is so delicious. Add pesto and you've got yourself a delicious crispy caprese sandwich that takes almost no time to make.

The best thing is this is one of those recipes that's almost not even a recipe. You can customize easily to what you want and also the amounts of everything you want! But read through for guidelines, then make then customize to your tastes!

Ingredients:

  • Bread - Regular sandwich bread works perfectly for making grilled cheese sandwiches in the air fryer.
  • Pesto - The pesto helps to give those Italian flavors to the sandwich.
  • Cheese - Mozzarella cheese works perfectly for the air fryer caprese sandwich. You can use fresh mozzarella cheese that you tear or slice and place on the sandwich or shredded mozzarella cheese. I prefer fresh mozzarella cheese, but use what you have!
  • Tomato - I love using roma or campari tomatoes for the caprese grilled cheese. Slice them thinly for the sandwich.
  • Butter or Mayo - Some people love butter and some people love mayo on the outside of their grilled cheese sandwiches. This will help the sandwich gets crispy and golden brown.

How to customize:

  • Want your sandwich a little spicy? Add some Calabrian chili paste to your sandwich.
  • Want to amp up the cheese flavor? Use a combination of cheeses to bring out those cheesy vibes. Use parmesan, gouda, or even a sharp cheddar to add more cheesiness.
  • Add a drizzle of balsamic vinegar after adding the tomatoes.
  • Want more basil flavor? Add some fresh basil leaves to the grilled cheese.

Serving suggestions:

The air fryer caprese grilled cheese can be served in so many ways! Some chips or fries are delicious, but here's a few specific ideas:

  • Peri-peri french fries
  • Crispy battered french fries
  • Italian-inspired french fries
  • Tuscan kale salad
  • Tuscan chicken soup

Recipe tips:

  • All air fryers cook differently! Check frequently to make sure the air fryer grilled cheese is done to your liking.
  • If using fresh mozzarella cheese, make sure it is sliced thinly before adding to the sandwich. That way it will melt properly and quickly.
