I love fancying up dishes with only a few simple ingredients. Is that even a word? Fancying? Whether it is or not, this miso butter is one of the simple, easy dishes I love making to make my meals feel fancier.

The miso paste, brown sugar, and butter pair together to make butter just feel a little bit more special. It's got an umami flavor with a bit of sweetness.

You might be wondering how to use miso butter. I love using it spread onto toast, croissants, or biscuits. And of course, steak and salmon! It pairs beautifully with dishes like that. Serve a dollop on top of a seared steak. Or with a beautifully cooked fillet of salmon. Sometimes I'll throw it in the skillet while I'm cooking shrimp!

Such a delicious condiment that is just so flavorful and easy to make.

Ingredients

  • Miso - white miso paste is what I typically use
  • Butter - I typically use unsalted butter, however you can use salted if you prefer
  • Brown sugar - This allows for a nice bit of sweetness to the miso butter
  • Salt (optional) - Salt is optional. If you use unsalted butter, you may want to add a pinch of salt.

How to make miso butter

This is such an easy recipe! You'll want to make sure your butter is room temperature and softened. But after it's nice and softened, simply add all the ingredients to a bowl.

Then, mash them up with a fork! You could also use a mixer or food processor to mix them together if you prefer.

Combining ingredients to make miso butter

If serving immediately, I like to transfer to a different bowl and serve with my meal. If not serving right away, I will press into a log shape, wrap in plastic wrap, and store in the refrigerator.

How to store the miso butter

Miso butter should be stored wrapped in plastic wrap in the refrigerator. For easy cutting/use, roll into a log shape before wrapping in plastic wrap.

Recipe tips

  • Feel free to add more miso or brown sugar as you like. Taste, and then adjust to your tastes.
  • Use a good quality butter.
  • Customize if you want! Add black pepper, garlic, orange zest, etc.
