Miso butter salmon is ready in less than 20 minutes! This is an easy recipe to make, but has so much delicious flavor from the miso, soy sauce, and butter.
This salmon is so delicious. The miso pairs so nicely with soy sauce and a little sweetness from sugar. And all that is mixed with butter to give the salmon a delicious decadence.
Every single time I make this salmon I wish I could just eat it every night for dinner. It's so flavorful and honesty easy to make. Low effort for high reward.
Sometimes I will make the miso butter salmon in the skillet, sometimes in the oven. I've given oven instructions in the post, but check out the recipe tips for stovetop instructions if you prefer!
Ingredients
- Salmon fillets
- White miso paste
- Butter
- Brown sugar
- Soy sauce
- Green onions
- Sesame seeds (optional)
How to make miso butter salmon
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Add the softened butter, miso, brown sugar, soy sauce, and green onions to a bowl.
Mash to combine everything together. You can do this with a fork or spatula.
If your butter is still cold, it may look like mine below and not incorporate as well. Don't worry though, it will still cook fine and taste delicious.
Pat your salmon dry and remove any bones if needed.
Spread the miso butter mixture on top of the salmon.
Place in an ovenproof skillet. I used a cast iron. (If your salmon has skin, place it skin side down).
Cook for 14-15 minutes. If you want, broil the top of the salmon for 1-2 minutes to caramelize. I sprinkled black sesame seeds over the top of mine after it came out of the oven.
Plate and top with more green onions. Pour any of the leftover miso butter sauce from the skillet onto the salmon.
Recipe tips
- Use an ovenproof skillet for cooking the salmon. This will allow you to pour the melted miso butter on top of the salmon.
- I use salted butter for this. If using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt to the miso butter mixture.
- You can also make this recipe on the stove. (I've done it many times!) If cooking on the stove, sear the salmon, then add the miso butter at the end to melt. Finish cooking the salmon in the miso butter and spoon the melted miso butter on top of the salmon when plating.
- Cooking time may depend on the size and thickness of your salmon.
Customization ideas
I love this recipe as is, but it's easy to customize too! If you want a bit of spice, you can add red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, or a bit of sriracha.
Want to make it sweeter? Add more brown sugar.
Sometimes I add a bit of sesame oil to give it a more sesame flavor. A little goes a long way!
What to serve with the miso butter salmon
Miso butter salmon pairs well with so many dishes! I love it with sesame rice, air fryer green beans, and air fryer carrots.
