What is blue spirulina?
Blue spirulina is a blue-green algae that is derived from green spirulina. It is said to be very high in antioxidants and has many health benefits. It is easy to find in powdered form, and is a delicious addition when making smoothies. You can also use it in lattes or milkshakes to give them a fun blue color.
What's the difference between blue spirulina and green spirulina?
Blue spirulina powder is said to be derived from green spirulina. To make blue spirulina, the phycocyanin is extracted from the algae. This is what gives the blue spirulina the bright blue color and makes it so irresistible in those smoothies and desserts.
Green spirulina powder is said to contain a high dose of b vitamins, and has different nutrients such as chlorophyll that the blue spirulina does not have. Also, the taste of spirulina comes through more in green spirulina (as does the smell). It can definitely have a more seaweed smell.
Regardless, there are so many benefits of spirulina and adding either (or both) to smoothies is a great and delicious way to get in nutrients in an easy way.
Of course, always ask a doctor before consuming a supplement like spirulina if you have questions about it in your diet, and it's not recommended to consume more than a teaspoon (4 grams) of spirulina a day. And of course, we're always finding out more about nutrition and nutritional benefits, so use your best judgement and see what works for you!
Customization ideas:
- Add an extra boost of nutrition by adding hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seed (ground or whole), or even some protein powder.
- Swap out the frozen pineapple or frozen banana with some frozen mango.
- Add a handful of baby spinach or kale to the smoothie (note - this may change the color of the smoothie).
Recipe tips:
- While it can be tempting to add more blue spirulina to your smoothie to intensify the blue flavor, only 1 teaspoon (or 4 grams) of spirulina is recommended daily.
- Unless you have a high-speed blender, smoothies can be hard to blend. If needed, stop the blender, mix with a spoon (and add more liquid if needed), then continue blending.
How to make the blueberry spirulina smoothie:
Add all the ingredients to the smoothie jar.
Ideally, in a high-speed blender, blend until smooth. If needed, stop the blender and break apart the frozen fruit with a wooden spoon, then blend again. (Or add additional almond milk or milk of choice if needed).
Pour into a tall glass and serve immediately.
