Air fryer upside down tarts are delicious and easy to make! This viral TikTok recipe trend is adapted for the air fryer and is so fun and flavorful. Puff pastry is combined with sweet or savory ingredients for a flaky, puffy, golden brown treat.

When I recently saw the viral tiktok for upside down puff pastry tarts, I knew I need to try it... but in the air fryer. I wasn't sure how it would work out, but with some experimentation, I found the winning combination!
I tried out a few different combinations in the air fryer, but my favorite was the peaches. My husband really loved the apple upside down tarts, but he gave both 5/5 stars. He can be a tough critic, so if he gave it 5/5, I know it's a winner!
Why make upside down tarts?
Okay, you may think... why make upside down tarts when you can just layer on the toppings otherwise. Well, let me tell you.
First, because there are no ingredients weighing down the tart, since the puff pastry is laid over the fillings, the puff pastry gets SUPER puffy.
So when you flip the tart over, you retain that puffiness.
When making in the air fryer, I then air fry it for a little longer after flipping so the top gets all nicely caramelized. So easy and so good.
Ingredients
- Puff pastry
- Egg
- Peaches
- Honey
Note that the ingredients above are to make an air fryer peach tart. The fruit can be switched out for other sweet and savory options! Below are some ideas, but you can be creative!
Sweet upside down puff pastry tart ideas
If you are making a sweet upside down tart, I like to drizzle the parchment with honey, then lay down my fruit. If seasoning, I typically season the fruit after I add it to the parchment paper.
- Apples and cinnamon
- Pear
- Pineapple and brown sugar
- Strawberry
Savory upside down puff pastry tart ideas
For a savory upside down tart, I like to add a little olive oil drizzle to the parchment paper, then add my fillings on top of that before adding the puff pastry.
- Tomato and ricotta or feta
- Zucchini and cheese
- Onion and cheese
- Pepperoni topped with a little tomato sauce (add some mozzarella cheese after flipping)
What to serve with the tarts
Air fried upside down tarts are delicious served as is. I've eaten them warm or room temperature, and both are delicious!
I also love serving sweet tarts with a scoop of ice cream, a dusting of powdered sugar, or some whipped cream like this cinnamon whipped cream.
Want to just make some air fryer puff pastry? It's a quick and easy dessert that can be topped in a lot of ways!
Recipe tips
- Try to make sure you're spacing out your tarts appropriately in your air fryer and leave room for the puff pastry.
- All air fryers cook differently. Check to make sure your tart is getting nicely browned but not burned.
- Different fruits/veggies may require different cook times. Some items may work best if they are pre-cooked before adding to a tart.
- Note that total cooking time will depend on how many tarts you can fit in your air fryer at a time. Two fit into my air fryer at once.
How to make air fryer upside down tart
First, thaw your puff pastry according to the package direction. I chose to thaw mine for 40 minutes at room temperature.
Next, unroll carefully. If any of the seams have cracked, wet your fingers and smooth out any cracks.
Cut the puff pastry into 6 sections.
Cut parchment paper to fit your air fryer basket. (Note: While I typically use air fryer parchment paper that has holes, for this recipe I typically use regular parchment paper).
Place parchment paper in your air fryer basket.
Drizzle the honey onto the parchment paper, spaced apart.
Place the peaches over the top, slightly overlapping as needed. Note that you will need to leave enough room for the pastry to fit over the peaches with a border.
Place pastry over the top of the peaches and then press around the peaches to form a border.
Beat an egg in a small bowl and brush onto the puff pastry.
Air fry at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes, then carefully flip over. (If any peaches fall out, just put them back in the tart).
Place the air fryer basket back in and air fry at 350 degrees F for an additional 5 minutes, until the top is brown and golden.
Plate and enjoy!
I sometimes like to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top when the upside down tarts are warm. A delicious combination!
Here's a picture of the apple ones I made too! I sprinkled a little cinnamon on these.

Hi! Can I use thawed frozen peaches for this recipe?? It's just what I have on hand
Aimee
Yes, if they are thawed already, that should work well! You just might want to pat dry to remove any excess moisture.
